Influence Music Hall, 135 SE Third Ave., Hillsboro is fast becoming well known in the music world.
The people who run Influence Music Hall have a mission to improve the quality of lives using the common bond of a love of the arts to bring people together. Having concerts in a small, intimate setting is one of the ways they do that.
On Saturday, Aug. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Eric John Kaiser will celebrate the release of his latest CD by giving a concert for the people of Hillsboro and the Portland area. Kaiser comes here from his home in France where he has a music career.
Kaiser sings his songs in his own language, French, but he explains them and why he wrote them. For instance, Le collectionneur, which means
"the collector" in French, is one of his songs. "One night in Paris," he explained, "I met this guy that told me about his story, how he use to collect women…he seemed sad and unhappy…this song is about him. It's the story about someone that treated people as objects. Because he was so self-centered, he ended up not sharing much, not experiencing much in life and not growing as a person."
Some songs have a deeper connection for him like Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince). Kaiser knew a surfer that was the brother of a woman he was dating at the time. "He traveled the world with his surfer career and when he came through Paris he would stay with us for a few days," Kaiser said. "The last time I saw him he was on his way from Paris to Portugal in a rental car with a friend of his. I remember when I waved goodbye to him I thought he had somewhat of a James Dean character and was full of energy. That was the last time I saw him. He died in a car accident in the North of Portugal on one of those dangerous and tortuous roads. He was 21; you don’t leave this planet when you are only 21. I wrote this song for him and his sister."
Tualatin Valley Artists, Inc. is the non-profit corporation that runs Influence Gallery and Music Hall. Besides having concerts, Influence shows visual art in the gallery and has open mic events every Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at 135 SE Third Ave.
August 3rd: Featured Artist Lam Ton
Who: Â Â Featured Artist Lam Ton
What: Â Â Influence Gallery, 131 SE Third Ave., Hillsboro, OR 97123
When: Opening Reception, First Tuesday, August 3, 2010 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Show to run through Aug 30th.
Working tirelessly to produce a body of artwork, Lam Ton has developed his own unique style using acrylic paint he makes himself and a style of layering with his impressionist style that defies description.
The opening reception will be held First Tuesday, Aug. 3 at 6:00 pm at Influence Art Gallery, 131 SE Third Ave., Hillsboro. Wine and hors d'ourvres will be available along with the music of guitarist/singer Jeff Lucas who has a way of singing that will entertain while you peruse the fine art.
In certain light, Ton's paintings show almost a three-dimensional quality. Then you close in to look at detail and discover the paint itself is built up that certain areas are three-dimensional.
But to get the full effect of his painting talent you must move back to take a look. When you do you discover an almost photographical realism shines through, especially in the backgrounds. Whole villages appear that you didn’t know were there; people show up, some in the foreground and some way back.
Recently accepted in the Rose Festival Art Show, a juried art show put on by the Oregon Society of Artists, Ton showed his painting of a single rose. And the Downtown Business Association used his artwork for their Artwalk poster, painted special to show art lovers strolling down the street during Artwalk
Ton's painting has an element unmistakably of pain; he admits that come from his heritage. Escaping his war-torn home country, Vietnam, Ton has made a life that shows the hard work and determination he has to be a success. Owner of the tattoo shop in Hillsboro, Canyon Body Art, 133 SE 3rd Ave., Ton also owns a Nail Salon and another tattoo shop in Beaverton.
Belonging to the group, Tualatin Valley Artists Inc., Ton spends his days painting along with other artists in Influence Gallery, often outside on the sidewalk on nice summer days.
Heather Wells, photographer, Jan Su, James Tschida, Devon Yan Berrong, Elina Zebergs, Priscilla Decker and Linda Holland will also show their latest artwork. The show will continue until Aug. 30.
Tualatin Valley Artists, Inc. is a non-profit corporation that runs Influence Gallery and is made up of creative people that believe the community can be made a better place through experiences with the arts. Influence not only shows visual art but also has open mic events every Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at 135 SE Third Ave. For more information, call Linda Holland 503-956-5604.

The music RaKnMi plays is in the style of the singer/songwriters of the late 60s and early 70s. They lean toward playing a mix of music written by artists such as John Prine, Jesse Winchester, Steve Goodman, Bob Dylan, and others in that vein. RaKnMi likes to present their music in a laid back manner that reflects good friends hanging around on the porch making music for the enjoyment of family and friends. Not a lot of flash, just good foot-tapping hum along music.

"...the best folk-rock act nobody's ever hear of... The intelligence and intensity of Mallonee's writing has elicited comparisons to Dylan from his loyal underground admirers. Given the consistency and quality of Mallonee's work over eight albums, he is arguably the first writer since John Prine to make the comparison plausible." - New York Press

The Influence Gallery carries wine for all types of wine buyers and can be bought by the bottle or the case, and we offer wine by the glass at our Open Mic Night at the Influence Music Hall.
Skip Farmer is our wine supplier and he will be suppying us wine from local distributors as well as importing wine from Europe. He says people can tell him what their favorite wine is and he can probably have it for them next time around.
We will have a Red Guitar, a rich blend of grapes that really compliment each other. This wine's greatest plus is that it is "easy" on the palate with a lingering, plesant flavor. There will also be a French blush wine offered that has a crisp, clean flavor without being overly sweet. The white wine for this month's Artwalk will be a french style blend from David Hill, a local winery.
Since Artwalk means complementary glasses of wine we will be giving sample wine tastes of these wines and have the full bottles for sale.
